TWU Spartans (0) vs. the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds (3)
(25-16, 25-13, 25-23)

’Birds power past Spartans

Langley, British Columbia –
Thunderbirds too much for Spartans. The Trinity Western University women’s volleyball team had their hands full with the number 2 ranked (CIAU) University of British Columbia Thunderbirds. Kaley Boyd (3rd, Middle, Parksville, BC) and Christine Bonish (4th, Power, Coquitlam, BC) powered the Thunderbirds past the Spartans, as the two combined for a 50% kill efficiency in the 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-23) win over the Spartans.

“We served the ball very well tonight (7 aces),” said TWU head Coach Carol Hofer. “But UBC has two strong and experienced ‘go to’ players who will get the point every other time they make an attack. Eventually, Kristen [Groot] (1st, Power, Burnaby, BC) will develop into a ‘go to’ player, but she is in her first year and is still learning to play the game at the CIAU level.”

In the first set the Spartans stayed with the Thunderbirds for the first half, tied 13-13. But the Thunderbirds’ outside hitters closed out the set with a 12-3 run on their way to a 25-16 win.

The UBC jumped out early in the second set, going up 15-5 before closing out the set 25-23.

Trinity Western came out strong in the third set and held a slim lead at 19-17. The Spartans hung tough with the ’Birds for the entire set, but could not overcome the Thunderbirds strong attack. UBC won the final set 25-23 to give them the match 3-0.

The Spartans were led by Kristen Groot 10 kills and Lauren Good (1st, Setter, Surrey, BC) 9 digs.

The Thunderbirds were led by Christine Bonish 11 kills and Leah Allinger (4th, Power, Calgary, AB) 7 kills 10 digs.

Both teams play again tomorrow night, Saturday, November 11. Game time at Trinity Western University is set for 6:00 PM.
