T’birds sweep weekend

Langley, British Columbia –
On Saturday night the UBC Thunderbirds flew past the Trinity Western University Spartans 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-14) in Canada West league play. The win pushes the Thunderbirds to a 5-1 record. While the Spartans drop to 0-6.

“Our goal every match is to play the best that we are capable of right now,” said TWU head coach Carol Hofer. “We can play with most of the teams in our conference. We just need to be more consistent in our play.”

The Spartans started out matching the Thunderbirds point for point until the 15-16 point of the first set. At that point the Thunderbirds raised their level of play to a point that the Spartans were unable to match. UBC went on to win the set with a 9-5 run.

The next two sets were all Thunderbirds. The Spartans were unable to mount any kind of attack in the final to sets. TWU’s defense held the Thunderbirds to 17% kill efficiency over the final 2 sets, but the Spartans were unable to take advantage, as they were only able to attain a 6% kill efficiency in those sets.

“Our defense can match up with any team in the conference,” said Hofer. “We are just lacking the ability to put the ball away offensively.”

Statistical leaders for the Thunderbirds were Leah Allinger (4th year, Power, Calgary, AB) 7 kills, 4 digs and Sara Cummings (3rd year, Middle, Surrey, BC) 7 kills, 3 digs.

Statistical leaders for the Spartans were Kristen Groot (1st year, Power, Burnaby, BC) 7 kills, 3 digs and Daelyn Martens (1st year, Libero, Chilliwack, BC) 10 digs.

Next up for the Spartans is Friday and Saturday, November 17 and 18 at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, SK.
