Lack of Consistency Costs Spartans

Langley, British Columbia –
Unforced errors cost the Spartans Friday night against the University of Manitoba Bisons. The Bisons took advantage of 36 unforced errors by the Trinity Western University women’s volleyball team in their 3-0 (25-19, 25-9, 25-15) victory over the Spartans.

“As a team we need to learn that if you want to become a championship team, you need to consistently work hard day after day,” said TWU head coach Carol Hofer. “We also need individuals to become personally responsible for their performances.”

Jolene Dryfhout (3rd year, power, Surrey, BC) 7 kills, started the Spartans off well as they were leading the Bisons 16-15 at the second technical timeout of the first set. “Jolene probably had her best match of the year tonight,” said Hofer. But after the timeout Manitoba went on a 9-3 run to win the first set, 25-19.

The Spartans had trouble finding any kind of attack in the second set, as the Bisons won the set 25-9.

The Bisons took full advantage of the Spartans errors in the 3rd set. Trinity Western’s unforced errors kept giving Manitoba points. The Bisons only needed to earn 9 points on their own as the Spartans gave the Bisons 16 points and the set, 25-15. “We need to make teams earn their wins instead of handing points to them,” said Hofer.

Statistical leaders for the Spartans were Dryfhout – 7 kills, Ruth Unaegbu (2nd year, middle, Port Coquitlam, BC) – 5 kills and Daelyn Martens (1st year, libero, Chilliwack, BC) – 12 digs.

The Bisons were led by Jennifer McDougall (5th year, rightside, Winnipeg, MB) – 8 kills, Kathy Hrehirchuk (4th year, middle, Dauphin, MB) – 8 kills and Jaclyn Schmidt (3rd year, leftside, Winnipeg, MB) – 14 digs.

The two teams play again Saturday, November 25 in Winnipeg, MB.
