#2 Thunderbirds Fly Over Spartans

Langley, British Columbia –
The Trinity Western University Spartans lost 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-13) to the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds in Tuesday’s midweek Canada West women’s volleyball match-up.

The visiting Spartans came out strong against the 2nd best team in the country. After the second technical time out the Spartans found themselves playing right with the heavily favored Thunderbirds and were only down 16-14.

With the score 17-15 for the T-birds the Spartans ran into a string of unforced errors and were suddenly down 23-15 and out of the set. The Spartans battled, but the lead was to much as the Thunderbirds won the first set 25-18.

The second set saw the Spartans struggle with their serve receive, which limited their attack. The Thunderbirds went up 2-0 with the 25-17 second set victory.

TWU Coach Carol Hofer juggled her line up to start the 3rd set. Unfortunately the Spartans still struggled with their serve receiving and dropped the 3rd set to the Thunderbirds 25-13.

“We had a tough time with UBC’s serving tonight,” said Hofer. “We served tough against [UBC] and we had an effective night blocking, but the inconsistent passing cost us throughout the match.”

Leading the way for the Spartans were Kristen Groot ( 1st yr, Power, Burnaby, BC) 4 kills, 9 digs, 1 block and Ruth Unaegbu (2nd yr, Middle, Port Coquitlam, BC) 4 kills, 4 digs, 1 block. Topping the Thunderbirds were Christine Bonish 11 kills, 6 digs 2 service aces and Michelle Collins 5 kills and 9 digs.

The Spartans resume action this Friday and Saturday, January 12 & 13. When they will host the University of Saskatchewan. Game time at TWU is set for 6:00 PM
