Spartans unable to finish against Cougars

Langley, British Columbia –
The University of Regina held off the Trinity Western University women’s volleyball team Friday night in Regina, SK. The Cougars won 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-13) but they had to come from behind in both of the first two games to gain the victory.

The Spartans jumped out in front early in the first set (8-4) before the Cougars rallied to win 25-22. But the heartbreaker for the Spartans was the 2nd set.

The Spartans had a solid game going. They jumped out early, going up 12-5. Then exchanged points to take a 23-15 lead and what looked like a sure-fire win. Unfortunately, the Cougars responded and went on a 10-0 run to close out the game 25-23.

With the wind taken out of them, the Spartans had little left in the final set as they fell 25-13.

“This was one of our most disappointing losses of the year,” said TWU head coach Carol Hofer. “We had all the right information [on Regina] and we were in position to make the plays, but we just did not dig the ball tonight.”

The Cougars led the Spartans on the defensive side of the net, out blocking TWU 22.5 – 3.5 and out digging them 58-27.

“We have to regroup and come back tomorrow with all of our pistons firing,” said Hofer.

The Cougars were led by Lisa Reynolds 14 kills, 11 digs and Sam Lawrek 10 kills, 10 digs. The Spartans were led by Jolene Dryfhout (3rd yr, P, Surrey, BC) and rookie of the year candidate Kristen Groot (1st yr, P, Burnaby, BC) 4 kills, 7 digs and 1 block.

The two teams play again Saturday, January 26, 2001. Game time in Regina is set for 8:15 PM.
