Spartans Kick-Off the New Year

Langley, British Columbia –
Trinity Western University’s women’s volleyball team opened the new year the way they ended the old one: with a win. Tonight the Spartan women defeated the visiting University of Saskatchewan Huskies in straight sets 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 27-25).

Despite these two teams coming into this match with identical records (2-8), tonight was evidence that numbers do not always tell the whole story. Although still shaking off some rust from the Christmas break, the Spartans outplayed the Huskies for most of the match. Too many errant Saskatchewan passes translated into “gimmes” for Trinity Western.

The first two sets were fairly straightforward wins for the Spartans, but things got a little more interesting in the third set.

The Spartans allowed the Huskies to get ahead a little in this set, but their lead was tenuous at best. The score remained close as the Spartans struggled with their serve and attack errors and the Huskies could not convert their chances into points. Finally TWU pulled out the win after some consistent serving by Rhonda Schmuland got them back within one point of Saskatchewan.

Trinity Western’s Lies Verhoeff led both teams with 13 kills, while Stephanie Wheler led the Huskies with 9 kills.

TWU hosts the University of Saskatchewan again tomorrow night, Saturday, at 6:00pm.

Game Notes: TWU dominated offensively in this match with 40 kills to Saskatchewan’s 29 and a .585 attack efficiency to .240…
