Huskies Bite Spartans

Langley, British Columbia –
The Spartan women’s volleyball team could not extend their win streak to three tonight, losing at home to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies by a score of 3-1 (16-25, 25-14, 21-25, 21-25).

Tonight the Huskies proved to be hungrier than the Spartans, roaring out of the gates in the first set and never looking back even after a slight hiccup in their success in the second set. All four games were gritty, with both teams struggling to get anything going offensively throughout the match, committing a grand total of 44 attack errors.

TWU clawed their way back into the fourth set after trailing for the entire third set. After being down by eight, some great teamwork and scrambling plays by the Spartans gave them new life. They fought to within two, 22-20, but could not hold on for the win.

Kristen Groot led the Spartans with 12 kills and Stephanie Wheler led the Huskies with 11.

TWU plays at cross-town rival UBC next weekend, January 10 and 11, at 6:00pm.

Game Notes: Rhonda Schmuland had another solid performance with some key blocks (2 solo, 1 assisted) and kills (11), as well as consistent serving (2 aces, no errors)…Lies Verhoeff had 10 kills and 5 blocks (3 solo)…Saskatchewan’s Andrea Ferwerda had 9 blocks (8 assisted)…the Huskies and Spartans remain tied with records of 3-9…
