Spartans Push Wesmen

Winnipeg, MB –
The #5 ranked Winnipeg Wesmen were in a battle with the #10 Trinity Western University Saturday night at Winnipeg’s Duckworth Centre. The visiting Spartans gave the hometown Wesmen everything that they could handle before dropping the five set match 3-2 (25-13, 20-25, 19-25, 25-17, 15-9).

“It was a tough battle for us, but the team played much better tonight,” said TWU Head Coach Carol Hofer. “Our blocking was a highlight for us as it was a much improved effort over last night.”

The first set saw the Wesmen dominate as they cruised to a 25-13 first set victory. The Spartans, who looked much more confident and prepared this match compared to last night came out and beat the Wesmen in the second set 25-20 and also took the third set 25-19.

The Wesmen got several key kills and defensive plays to take the fourth set 25-17 and even the match at two games a piece. The fifth and deciding set also belonged to Winnipeg as they battled their way to a 15-9 set win and the match 3-2.

Andrea Charbonneau led the Wesmen in the match with 18 kills, while Aynsley Laluk had 16 kills and 16 digs. Jodi Schaufele (3rd yr, leftside, Surrey, BC) led the Spartans with 15 kills and Julie Blackburn (2nd yr, libero, Surrey, BC) had 15 digs in the loss.

The loss drops the Spartans to 2-4 in Canada West, while the win improves the Wesmen to 3-3.

The Spartans now head home to host the # 2 ranked University of Calgary next weekend. Match times on Friday, November 19 and Saturday, November 20 are set for 6:00 pm.

Match Notes: TWU finished with 22 team blocks…first year middle Dayna Jansen VanDoorn (Langley, BC) had a good match at the net, finishing with a team high four solo blocks and four block assists…
