Spartans Fall to T-Birds

Vancouver, British Columbia –
The UBC women’s volleyball team’s play at the net proved to be the difference as the third-ranked Thunderbirds cruised to a straight sets (25-18, 25-19, and 25-19) victory over the ninth-ranked Trinity Western Spartans Saturday night at War Memorial Gym.

“It was not the outstanding performance that we had Friday and UBC played very well tonight,” said TWU Head Coach Carol Hofer. “But overall it is a good weekend for us to build on as we fight for a playoff spot.”

The T-Birds (12-2) notched 11 blocks, including 16 block assists, to effectively control the Spartan (5-9) attack.

Julie Blackburn (2nd yr, libero, Surrey, BC) had a match-high 15 digs and Danielle Foth (1st yr, LS/RS, Abbotsford, BC) led the Spartan attack with nine kills.

UBC’s Emily Cordonier notched a match-high nine kills to pace the competition for the second straight night.

The Spartans will now return home to host the University of Regina Cougars on Friday, January 28 and Saturday, January 29. Match times at TWU are set for 6:00 pm.

Match notes: TWU hit at 10%, while UBC hit for 15.7%...the Spartans currently hold the final play-off spot with 10 points, six points over the seventh place Manitoba Bisons and two points behind the fifth ranked Regina Cougars…
