Spartans Still Perfect

LANGLEY, British Columbia –
The ninth ranked Trinity Western University women’s volleyball team (4-0) completed their sweep of the Simon Fraser University Clan (1-5) with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-14) win Monday night on Burnaby Mountain.

“It was a great team effort tonight,” said TWU Head Coach Carol Hofer. “We came out flying and were able to control the match from start to finish. It was a great way to build momentum as we head into UBC next week.”

The Spartans ability to close out sets proved to be the difference in tonight’s match. In each of the first two sets the Spartans and Clan were even until the late stages of the set. In the first set TWU led 21-20 before closing out the set with a 4-0 run to take the set 25-20 and in the second set the Spartans led 20-19 before closing out the set with a 5-1 run to take the set 25-20.

In the third set TWU took control by going on an 8-1 run between the two technical timeouts to improve a one point lead, 8-7 to an eight point lead, 16-8. The Spartans kept the momentum after the timeout as they closed out the match with the 25-14 win.

Dayna Jansen VanDoorn (2nd yr, middle, Langley, BC) with nine kills and six blocks and Leigh Dreher (1st yr, leftside, Prince George, BC) with nine kills led the Spartans, while Mandy Martinig and Tanis Payne led the Clan with ten kills each. TWU’s Saralyn Ragust led all players with 13 digs.

Next up for the Spartans is at the fourth ranked University of British Columbia Thunderbirds on November 18-19. Match time at UBC’s War Memorial Gym are set for 6:15 pm

Match Notes: TWU along with Calgary (4-0) are the only teams in Canada West who have yet to drop a set in league play…TWU hit at 31% for the match while SFU hit at 13.7%...the Spartans had eight team blocks to the Clan’s five…
