  • Biography

    Henry has a Bachelor of Music in Performance from Western Washington University. During this time his teachers were Wayne Gorder and Gary Guthman. Upon graduating from university, Henry received a Canada Council grant to further his studies in the U.S.  He took lessons from Charley Davis for 6 months while in Los Angeles and then Jimmy Maxwell in New York for a further 2 months. Some other teachers he has studied with include Arnie Chycoski, Larry Knopp, Uan Rasey, Jerry Hey, Dave Stahl, Malcolm McNab, Donald Green, Fred Sautter, Gary Grant, Jon Lewis and his first teacher, local legend Stew Barnett.

    Henry has been performing in the Vancouver area since the early eighties and is active in both the classical and commercial scenes in Vancouver. He played in the CBC orchestra for 18 years and continues to perform with the Vancouver Opera and the VSO as an extra. Over the years he has played on well over a hundred jingles and can be heard on many CDs including recordings by Aerosmith,  Motley Crue, Jackyl, Sam Roberts, and Paul Brandt among others. He has played for more than 20 touring musical  productions including the national tours of Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables and Spamalot. Additionally, he has played with the Winnipeg Ballet on many of their productions and tours. A few of the performers he has backed up are: Bob Hope, Gladys Knight, The Temptations, Mitzi Gaynor, Paul Anka, Liberace, David Foster, John Denver, Michael Bublé, Red Skelton, Clark Terry, Don Rickles, Anne Murray, Joan Rivers, Lou Rawls, Sheena Easton, Ray Charles and Wayne Newton.  Some of the jazz bands he has recorded with include the Ian McDougall Big Band, Hugh Fraser and VEJI, Alan Matheson Big Band and Fred Stride Jazz Orchestra. Some other highlights are playing for the opening of Expo 86 and the opening and closing ceremonies at the Vancouver Olympics. Henry also continues to play in many Arts Club productions including most recently: The Producers, Buddy, Hairspray and White Christmas.

    Henry has been teaching privately for over 25 years. He previously taught at Capilano College and has been at TWU since 2009. By drawing from his varied musical experiences, Henry will work with his students to help them achieve their own musical goals.
