MA in TESOL - Instruct and Inspire

The Trinity Western University MA TESOL degree prepares ESOL teachers to make a positive impact as they teach in academic preparation programs, university level writing and speaking classes, intensive English programs, and community-based adult education programs in Canada and around the world.

TWU MA TESOL alumni contribute to the educational world as teachers, materials developers, teacher-trainers, and administrators in English programs for both adults and youth in a variety of international and local contexts.  Those with public school teaching credentials will also benefit from the MA TESOL to become specialists in teaching ELLs locally or in teaching EFL in primary and secondary schools worldwide.

Students have a choice between an intensive 12-month resident program and a 2-year online program that may be completed while working as a teacher.

Small class size and warm relationships with faculty, collaborating instructors, and fellow learners are a given in both the online and on-campus cohorts.  Reflecting on personal values while developing ongoing professional relationships underscores the TWU commitment to bringing values back to life.

Brenda Allen, TWU Alumnus“I can't recommend the MA TESOL program enough. Unlike some other postgraduate programs the professors are really with you along way, taking a personal interest in your progress and well-being and ready with advice, guidance, and of course providing quality content/pedagogy. Distance programs can be lonely and it can be really difficult to stay motivated but I found the cohort system an effective deterrent for both. Working collaboratively also means accessing a great deal more information than would ever be possible alone - not to mention the opportunity of working with AWESOME classmates! So many fabulous memories!”
-Brenda Allen, TWU Alumnus

Not traditional lecture-based. The MA TESOL program is built upon the process of students researching and critically examining ideas, theories, methods and techniques in TESL.  "Flipped Learning" at its best!

Collaboration. Each course revolves around a set of interactive research projects. Working in teams, students research and then report to the rest of the cohort on their findings.  Such collaborative learning provides the setting for personal development as students of varying worldviews and cultural backgrounds share their unique perspectives.

Professional Development.  Each module in the MA TESOL program includes application to a specific teaching or learning context.  Students may tailor final course projects to their own teaching situation.  Students are also provided with opportunities to co-present workshops with faculty at a variety of Canadian and International conferences.

Internship.  A 14-week internship is completed in the final semester.  There are a variety of internship options, both in Canada and internationally, depending on student experience and interest. Those heading towards a Ph.D. program in TESL or Applied Linguistics may choose a thesis option.

The MA TESOL program offers two FLEXIBLE study options:

The online TWU MA TESOL (OL) is a 36 credit, 2 to 2.5 year program that has been designed for teachers around the world and in North America who are currently teaching ESOL and who wish to study online while continuing their professional duties.

The first summer of study includes a 3 week residency:  students are required to come to campus in July for a one-week orientation and most students then stay for a two-week intensive face-to-face session to complete the first course and begin the e-portfolio project. This session prepares students for the following two years' of online course work.

The program is based on individual reading and research papers, as well as on group projects that are centered around a curriculum “problem” or situation, so that all learning in based in a specific teaching / learning context.

On-Campus (resident) MA TESOL

The on-campus TWU MA TESOL (resident) is a 36-credit, 12-month program, that begins with a one-week orientation, usually the first week of September.

All classes are conducted at the Langley campus. Typically, students are actively involved in program activities six hours per day, five days per week, with additional readings and research done outside of the class. Students generally live either on campus or in close proximity. Once course work is completed, students are assisted in locating internship positions--either in the local area or around the world.

The on-campus track works well for North American teachers returning from teaching overseas who want to upgrade to an MA TESOL.  Similarly, international students who wish to spend time studying in Canada are welcome in the resident cohort.

The resident program may also be conveniently spaced over 24 months.

TWU MA TESOL graduates who teach in the K - 12 system are eligible for a pay raise.  BC teachers may apply for TQS Category 6.

TWU MA TESOL graduates are eligible to apply for TESL Canada Level 3 certification.

TWU MA TESOL program is accredited by TESL Ontario.

TWU MA TESOL is an official BCTEAL institutional member.
