On February 23rd, students at Trinity Western University’s Ottawa extension campus, the Laurentian Leadership Centre (LLC), welcomed Canada’s Minister of National Defence, the Honourable Peter MacKay, to the historic Booth House. Minister MacKay has addressed students at the LLC on several occasions in the past and taken time to meet with student interns.

In this year’s address, MacKay encouraged the students to take advantage the opportunities they have to shape the culture and public policy of Canada. “The Laurentian Leadership Centre places students who are eager to learn in an invaluable internship where they put their learning experiences into practice,” said MacKay. “When students participate in an LLC internship, they are placed in a workplace that deals with real life situations, gaining valuable experience.”

LLC students have unique academic and career opportunities through the program. Students take classes in government and public policy while interning in a field that suits their career interest. Past internships have included working for MP offices, government departments, embassies, NGOs, radio stations, newspapers, and businesses.

Steve Benjamins, a 5th philosophy major who is completing his undergraduate degree at the LLC, commented that his involvement in the program made him realize how he can be involved in politics. “Previously, involvement in Canadian politics seemed distant, but at the LLC, I am actively playing a role and being a part amazing opportunities,” he said.

For 4th year linguistics student Melody Holmes, the program has revealed a different side to politics. “The LLC has been a chance to see public leadership up close,” she stated. “It was also encouraging to hear Minister MacKay speak about how leadership requires the commitment to serving the greater good. That is something I deeply value.”

MacKay closed by telling students, “You have the unique opportunity to engage with ideas and policies that will have an important impact on how our society is organized. This is an important requisite for future leaders.”

Appreciative of Minister MacKay’s support of the students’ career development and goals, Janet Epp Buckingham, LL.D., director of the LLC, added, “We are honored by the interest Minister MacKay takes in emerging leaders, and the fact that he believes our program fosters strong leadership for the future of Canada. Histalk on leadership encouraged students to aim high and strive for excellence.”
