LANGLEY, British Columbia – On March 31 at the Sport BC 44th annual Athlete of the Year Awards Ceremony, Trinity Western University's fourth year basketball forward Jacob Doerksen of Abbotsford, B.C. was named the Sport BC University Athlete of the Year. The ceremony, presented by Telus, was held at the River Rock Show Theatre in Richmond, B.C.

“I really didn’t think I was going to win,” Doerksen said after the ceremony. “This award shows the work that our entire team did all season; they are the one of the main reasons that I received it.”

During a stellar 2008-09 season in which he averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds per game—the only player in the CIS to do so—Doerksen led the Spartans men’s basketball team to their best-ever finish and a Canada West bronze medal. He also ranked in the top ten in Canada West in eight different statistical categories. At the conclusion of the season, Doerksen was named Canada West men’s basketball Player of the Year and CIS men’s basketball Player of the Year as well as earning Canada West first team All-Star and CIS All-Canadian honours. Doerksen also spent the summer of 2009 as a member of the Canadian FISU men’s basketball team.

“Jacob is one of our leaders and one of the best players in the country. It is great to see him get recognized for the work that he is putting into his game and his team,” commented TWU men’s basketball Head Coach, Scott Allen.

Doerksen becomes only the second person to win the Athlete of the Year award as high school student, while he attended Rick Hanson Secondary, and as a university student. The only previous athlete to achieve the honour was Rosalyn Hicks, who won as a University of British Columbia soccer player in 2003 and as a high school student at Argyle Secondary in 1997.

Trinity Western University has now won back-to-back Sport BC University Athlete of the Year awards; women’s soccer player Nikki Wright earned the award in 2008.

Other TWU student Athletes who have won Sport BC Athlete of the Year awards include: Calvin Westbrook – 2006 high school Athlete of the Year, Jacob Doerksen – 2005 high school Athlete of the Year, and Jodi Schaufele – 2002 high school Athlete of the Year
