At TWU's 48th annual Commencement on May 1st, 412 students graduated. Amidst the celebrations, several of these graduates were honoured for their outstanding achievements over the past four years. Bethany Bustard, who received her Bachelor of Arts in International Studies, and Samuel Vander Veer, who earned his Bachelor of Arts in International Studies; Global Policy and International Affairs stream, were awarded this year’s TWU Citizenship Awards.

Valedictorian Ashley Crozier, who graduated with her Bachelor of Education, addressed graduates from the School of Education, School of Business and General Studies. Later in the day, fellow Valedictorians Kendra Gerbrandt, who earned her Bachelors of Science in Nursing; and Melody Holmes, who received her Bachelor of Arts with a major in Applied Linguistics, addressed graduates at the 2:00pm and 6:30pm services respectively.

There was a bittersweet moment in the 9:30am service, when TWU President, Jonathan S. Raymond, Ph.D., conferred a degree posthumously on Ashley Anne Tate, who tragically passed away after her battle with cancer earlier this spring. Kathy Tate received her daughter’s diploma, along with a bouquet of flowers.

TWU awarded two honorary doctorate degrees this year: the degree of Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa, was conferred on Mr. Hannu Haukka, president and CEO of Great Commission Media Ministries, while the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, was conferred on Michael Peterson, Ph.D., professor of Philosophy at Asbury University.

Mr. Haukka, an author and member of the Fellowship of European Broadcasters, founded International Russian Radio/TV (now Great Commission Media Ministries), a national radio and television ministry to the former Soviet Union in 1980. Today, Great Commission Media Ministries transmits radio and television broadcasts to Russia, Israel, China, India, Iran, Laos, Ethiopia, Eritrea, the Middle East and Somalia.

A Professor of Philosophy at Asbury University, Dr. Peterson’s focus is in the areas of philosophy of science, philosophy of education, philosophy of religion, and emerging dialogue between science and religion. Dr. Peterson has over 15 published books including With All Your Mind: A Christian Philosophy of Education from Notre Dame Press. He is the senior author of Reason and Religious Belief: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Religion from Oxford University Press, now in its 4th edition. His texts in philosophy of religion are used widely in many universities and colleges.
