Professional programs in acting and corporate communications

TWU’s School of the Arts, Media and Culture (SAMC) officially announces its first two professional programs, the Bachelor of Arts in Corporate Communications and the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting. Both Programs will commence September 2010.

The BFA in Acting is the only program in Canada to combine a Christian liberal arts education with intensive actor training. BFA students will gain a strong foundation in acting, voice, and movement, and receive a significant number of performance opportunities. In addition, students will be required to work backstage, and to take directing and playwriting. Angela Konrad, Theatre Department chair and award winning director, says, “Our goal is to graduate well-rounded theatre artists who are able to create their own work and make a significant contribution to the world of theatre.

039-professional-programs-photo01.jpgBecause the BFA degree is the accepted and expected professional designation for students seeking careers as actors in Canada, the addition of a BFA to SAMC’s offerings creates new opportunities for TWU students—and builds on TWU’s already strong acting program.

We are thrilled to be able to offer a program that we have been dreaming about for many years,” says Konrad. “We have fantastic faculty—professional theatre artists who are committed Christians and expert teachers—and that means we are uniquely qualified to offer first-rate actor training in a Christian context. I think that’s pretty exciting.

The other program announced, the BA in Corporate Communications(BACC), will be jointly offered by TWU’s School of the Arts, Media and Culture and School of Business and will be Canada’s first university undergraduate degree program in corporate communications.

The BACC is designed to educate graduates who will take on senior leadership roles in corporate communications. “The BACC program recognizes that corporations today are including communications executives in their senior administrative teams,” says Elsie Froment, Ph.D., dean of Academic Research, who assisted with the development of the program. “This means that communications executives who hope to work at senior levels in business need business training as well as communications training.

039-professional-programs-photo02.jpgGraduates of the BACC program will be capable communicators, equipped for senior corporate positions which involve team building, project management, media applications, and visual communication. They also will possess a basic understanding of business and competition in a global context. As well as equipping students to be creative writers, designers, and leaders in campaign development and delivery, the program will also train them to lead with integrity.

David Squires, Ph.D., dean of the School of the Arts, Media and Culture, is excited about the opportunities both programs will bring to students. “We believe that the best career preparation students can receive is one that includes a strong focus on the liberal arts. We want our students to engage with who they were created to be, to explore and take risks, to discover their human potential, and to prepare for their professional lives beyond university. These new programs will allow them to do just that.
